Think Before You Ink! Part 1: Some Basic Tattoo Do’s and Don’ts. Hey Tattooed Fans and Friends…it’s finally time for your first (or second or twenty-second) Tattoo! Here are some BASIC Do’s and Don’ts to think about before you walk into the tattoo shop, and most apply whether it is your first or twenty-first Tattoo…

Do make an appointment. And be patient when waiting to get your tattoo. Tattoo Artists do not rush through a sitting to get to the next person. They take their time with each customer in order to do their best work. Tattoo Artists tend to be perfectionists and YOU are their canvas AND their best advertisement. Besides, you don’t want them to rush through your tattoo, do you?

Do wear comfortable, loose fitting, appropriate clothing. Think about your tattoo placement and wear clothing that will easily allow access to that area. And remember that your tattoo session may take one or several hours, be cool and comfortable. And try to be very….still.

Do some advance research on your tattoo. A tattoo is a lifetime commitment, know what you want, or at least have a general idea of what you want before you go. Unless you are VERY free-spirited and a live-in-the-moment type person, impulse buying isn’t a good way to choose a tattoo. Your Tattoo Artist can help you explore and develop ideas, but have some idea or direction.

Do research the shop. Know the precautions they are taking for YOUR safety and theirs. Sterile equipment and supplies should always be used for tattoos and piercings. Watch for unacceptable or unsafe conditions, such as the re-use of STERILE single-use needles or Artists who don’t wear gloves….and

Do ask questions. Tattoo shops can be intimidating, but don’t be afraid to speak up — it’s your body! Make sure you see them take the tattoo needles from a fresh sealed package. The Tattoo Artist will generally open this package directly in front of you prior to your sitting. Alert your Artist if you know you’re allergic to red ink, or Latex or any other condition he or she should be aware of.

Do keep things simple. This rule applies if this is your FIRST tattoo. Start small. Getting a tattoo is painful, especially on areas with a lot of nerve endings, and different people react differently to pain. The pain IS tolerable, but start with a smaller, simpler design to see how YOU handle the pain before you get that huge, intricate back piece! (You CAN do those LARGE pieces in multiple sittings.)

Do choose an appropriate location for your tattoo(s). Think twice about where you place tattoos (and piercings) on your body. I would never (nor will I ever) tell you what you should or should not do to YOUR body, BUT – There IS Body Modification Discrimination out there in the REAL world! Consider placing your tattoo or piercing in an area that can be covered by clothing worn in the work place. More on Discrimination in future posts.

Do ask for recommendations. If you see someone with beautiful, detailed tattoos compliment them and ask where they were done, and WHO did them and find THAT Tattoo Artist. Tattoo Artists have ‘specialties’. There are experts in Tribal work, Fine-Line work, Lettering and Text, Portraits, etc. Ask to see their Portfolios. Find YOUR expert.

Do take a shower. It’s not a good idea to go get a tattoo right after work. Be considerate, go home, and take a shower. Your Tattoo Artist will appreciate it (and possibly spend more time on the details of your new body art).

Do listen to your Tattoo Artist. Once your tattoo is completed, your Tattoo Artist will tell you the best way to take care of your tattoo. Don’t listen to your family, friends or neighbors…follow your Artist’s tattoo aftercare instructions.

Do TIP your Tattoo Artist! If you didn’t know that tipping a tattoo artist is customary, and expected, now you do! Many Tattoo Artists are not paid an hourly wage, they work for a percentage of the money you pay for your tattoo. OR, they are independent contractors who pay the owner rent and overhead. Either way, they depend on tips. Tip your Bartender, Tip your Waitress, Tip your Barber or Stylist and TIP YOUR TATTOO ARTIST! And if you receive exceptional service, show your appreciation by tipping exceptionally well!

Next time (in Part 2) we’ll go over the Tattoo Don’ts. Talk to you then. Thanks!

Tribal tattoos have been the choice of more and more people these days. This form of body art has been there since the ancient times and it carries different meanings and symbolisms. Nearly 50% of the people who get a tattoo prefer tribal designs. So how did it come to be and where did it originate? For people back then, tribal tattoos were a form of marking to signify different things. Archaeologists have found tribal tattoos on various ancient countries like Egypt, Greece, Rome, and in Asia. During those days, tribal tattoos meant more than art.

Ancient people have used these tribal tattoos to depict symbol of rights, rank and devotion. They also use it as a form of symbols for award or security. People also used these tribal tattoos those days as an amulet, a talisman or a mark of seniority. However, for some it may be regarded as a medal but for those slaves who have been marked with a tattoo, life is not that easy. Until now, there are still some religions or societies which require their followers to have a certain tribal tattoo as a symbol of loyalty and brotherhood.

But nowadays, tribal tattoos act as body art and a way to express oneself. Some people really find it cool and hip. It is even considered as a fashion symbol and not just a marking. Trying to find a tribal tattoo that suits you best? Well, there are many tattoo shops out there and they have a wide variety of gallery that you can choose from. Remember, the design of your tattoo may show something about your personality and could make a lasting impression. So better think it through first before getting one.

But in some areas, tattoo shops are not that frequent so the choices are limited. Luckily, the age of computer technology has enabled us to surf the internet and have a look at a hundred options. All you have to do is to type in the work “tribal tattoos” in the search engine site and voila! You will be displayed with dozens of image results and even websites that you can contact when you want to get a tribal tattoo in no time. However, think a dozen times before deciding on what design to put on. Some people regret a lot once they have already gotten a tribal tattoo because they realized that they want a different tribal tattoo design.

Always keep in mind, removing a permanent tattoo is not that easy. Moreover, quality artwork takes time and it is in the hands of a powerful tattoo artist. No matter how fabulous the design is, the artist will still be the one to draw it into your skin so getting a highly refutable tattoo artist can definitely do the trick. But the intricacy of the design and the colors will definitely affect the rate or the price of the tribal tattoo. Furthermore, the cost also depends on the tattoo artist or the shop you decide to get your tribal tattoo done.

Aside from image results, you can also try joining forums on the internet, which have discussions on tribal tattoos and more. In this way, you would know other people’s opinion on which tribal tattoo is the best one. The larger the forum, the wider number of people and tattoo enthusiasts you can interact with. Plus, you can ask them of the best link in the most popular tribal tattoo galleries on the internet. Truly, surfing the online community has never been this exciting and enjoyable. So for the perfect tribal tattoos, go ahead and search the net for the latest trends and designs in the realm of body inking and tattooing.

Last month well let me rephrase that more like two months ago I wrote a post about the most popular places for men and women to get tattoos. Well if my memory serves I do not believe the wrist was one of those popular places. But I would like to add that to my list. I have noticed a lot of people more so celebrities have tattoos on their wrist. I think this is a cool place to get a tattoo, I’m not quit sure why, but for us ordinary people it’s probably not the best place to get inked. It probably had something to do with the fact that a lot of our jobs would not be so pleased with a visible tattoo on our wrists.

In case you are wondering how I came up with this conclusion I will explain. Here is a small list of celebrities that have wrist tattoos, Britney Spears (one on each wrist) Victoria “Posh” Beckham, Jessica Alba, Kristin Cavallari (From MTV’s Laguna Beach) Lindsay Lohan, Alyssa Milano and the list goes on. However, it is quit odd that I only listed women that have these wrist tattoos. But none the less it seems to be some sort of a trend in Hollywood to have a wrist tattoo. I would absolutely love to get one myself but I don’t think I could get on in such a visible place. I feel that I would regret it later on down the road. Either way it’s still interesting to see places a lot of people have tattoos.

If you are a woman who’s on the prowl for tattoo designs, you may be a little bit disappointed by the overly aggressive, masculine flash art that you’ve seen in the tattoo parlors. Just remember though, that even if those designs are the only things that are on display, they are usually not the only things that the tattoo artist can do! Take a look online for tattoo galleries that can help you find the flash you need for the perfect tattoo.

When looking for online galleries of tattoo art, one way to search is by topic. Think about the tattoo you are interested in having on yourself, and think about what it means to you. For instance, if you’re interested in having something slinky, very feminine and just a little sly, think about a cat tattoo and search for good cat tattoo flash. The more specific your search, the more you will be able to narrow down what it is you are looking for.

Searching online can be time-consuming, but as large as the internet is, chances are, you’ll find the right tattoo flash art, or at least find a design that you can modify. Remember that several of these sites require that you pay for the design before you print it out.

One online gallery that you can take a look at is Bmezine. This exhaustive site has an enormous gallery of tattoo pictures as well as a place where up and coming tattoo artists have posted flash art that they are interested in sharing. These galleries are sorted by topic and subject, so whether you want to take a look at floral tattoos or tattoos of popular cartoon characters, you can usually find it there.

When you are looking for online tattoo galleries, don’t forget to look at general art sites as well. Deviantart and Elfwood are two online galleries for artists and you can find plenty of tattoo inspiration. There are plenty of design sites online that have lovely, more abstract art for you to peruse. When you are looking for the perfect tattoo for you, looking in unlikely places can find you the perfect tattoo that you’ve always been looking for.

No matter where you are searching for a tattoo, don’t forget to speak with your artist. He or she might have some terrific ideas on where to search, and if you are lucky, they might be able to draw you up a piece of personalized art!

Over the weekend my husband and I attended the drag races and while we were there I couldn’t help to notice all the people that had tattoos. Of course this isn’t new to me because I am a tattoo lover and I know 36% of people from the ages of 18 to 35 have at least one tattoo. But what I found most interesting is the designs that people have. And the coolest thing about it is every tattoo is unique and different. As I have mentioned before tattoo designs are practically endless. But when you are out somewhere and actually get to see all the designs people have its cool, at least it is to me. And a lot of these people had more than one tattoo, which is very common. Also one thing that I found very interesting is that a vast majority of these people had tattoos on their legs, mainly the back of the calf.

Another thing that I noticed was that most of the men there had black tattoos while the women had colored ones. Which this could mean nothing or it could mean that women prefer colored ink over black ink. Which I do not fall in that catogory. For some reason I prefer my tattoos to be in black ink. And as the statistics suggest most of these people were women. For some reason more 18 to 35 year olds that have tattoos are women. And interestingly enough more women regret their tattoos and have them removed more often than a man.

I just thought I would share this because it’s always nice to see these statistics in real life. If that makes any sense.

Celtic tribal tattoo designs have a historical backdrop in the world of tattoo designs. Celtic culture was prevalent in Ireland, Britain and various other parts of Europe. When these regions were conquered by the Roman Empire, the Christian monks in Rome converted the Celtic people to Christianity. At the time they were greatly moved by the unique Celtic designs and so they started using them in their Bible manuscripts. Nowadays, these designs are used to ink Celtic tribal tattoos on the bodies of thousands of tattoo enthusiasts.

Celtic tribal tattoo designs have intermingling patterns that provide some symbolic meanings. If you want to express your passion for ancient culture and tradition, then Celtic tribal tattoos are a great option. The Celtic descendants originally wished to express their pride for their rich heritage through these designs. These tattoo designs have complicated knots that have no beginning or end and they represent the love for nature.

Celtic tribal tattoo designs focus more on emotions. Unlike other tattoo designs, they do not symbolize reality. Often Celtic tribal tattoo designs depict some natural objects like the sun, moon, stars, animals etc. The intertwining knots of course are complicated to design but they offer unsurpassed beauty.

The main reason for why more people admire Celtic tribal tattoo designs is that they are not gender specific. The designs reveal that both men and women are equal in the eyes of Mother Nature.

The most important aspect of Celtic tribal tattoo designs is their knots. The designs generally have unending strands. In rare designs like zoomorphic element or spiral, you can notice loose ends. The endless knots in Celtic tribal tattoo designs symbolize the continuity in life after death. Spirals are another inspiring design in Celtic tribal tattoos. They include double, triple and quadruple swirls.

When you make the decision to get a Celtic tribal tattoo, you are able to select simple or complicated Celtic tribal tattoo designs or anything in between. You can choose them to wear as armbands, on your lower back, ankles, and sleeve, or anywhere in the body.

You can view thousands of Celtic tattoo designs on the internet. The designs are so complicated to ink that you require a skilled artist. It is a good idea to take some effort in choosing a quality tattoo stencil designs and also to select a great tattoo artist. You should view his portfolio or converse with him\her freely before starting your tattoo design. It is worth to assure the quality of the tattoo artist’s work. The tattoo artist who has great passion for art and who has enough experience in inking Celtic tattoo designs can make it look gorgeous.

You can view amazing online tattoo gallery where you can get many varieties of Celtic tattoo designs. You just need to sign up and pay a very small amount to view the online gallery. There are various forums where you can meet and discuss with the tattoo artist. You can ask your queries and get them clarified before starting to ink your Celtic tribal tattoo design. It is sensible to ensure the hygienic conditions of the tattoo parlor, so please don’t arrive drunk at a tattoo parlor you have never seen before and pick out some silly design from a book. Take it serious and you will have no regrets.

The art of tattooing, it seems, is more popular than ever. With many American women now sporting flower tattoos and other designs boasting other exquisite, feminine patterns. Indeed, it’s almost a right of passage now for young women to get something that expresses their personalities, outlooks and interests. With so many quality studios all across the country, females in every region can find unique and beautiful ink representations to accentuate their own natural beauty of face and form.

Currently, one of the most popular types for young women is the lower back tattoo, which usually consists of some kind of floral design such as twining rose vines or midnight heart vines or some other variety of gorgeous flowers such as violets, daisies, orchids, tulips, or anything else that the artist’s imagination can envision and then etch into living flesh with his whirring needles and brightly colored inks. It truly is an art what they do.

In past generations, tattooing was looked down upon as a lower class artistic endeavor. But today, the high level of artistry coupled with advances in its technology, new drawings and new, more vibrantly colored inks, have lifted it into the mainstream. In the 21st Century, parlors spread out from the back alleys and outskirts of military bases, where they rested by pawn shops, biker bars, motorcycle parts stores and check-cashing outlets to suburban strip malls, where they are nestled between hair salons and high-end retail clothing outlets.

Of course, the popularity of shows like L.A. Ink and Miami Ink, featuring celebrity artists like Kat Von D hasn’t hurt the art at all. In fact, it has made it seem more glamorous than ever. It’s hard to find a gorgeous female Hollywood celebrity or high fashion model now that doesn’t sport some ink. Look at Angelina Jolie or Pamela Anderson, both of whom wear them proudly as they stride down the red carpet in their expensive designer gowns. Even the more conservative female celebrities probably have a tiny, discrete one of a butterfly or a flower somewhere on their tanned, toned, well-groomed forms. Placing them on the ankle is so common now among members of the fairer sex that they’re almost a cliché.

The pervasive popularity of feminine ink art just shows how much tastes in popular culture have shifted, with some artists now getting their work featured in books intended not just to share with other tattooists, but also with the general, tattoo-loving public, and even art lovers. In fact, many of the best contemporary tattoo artists have had their work featured in art galleries or museum showcases such as the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Art Museum in Washington D.C. or the South Street Seaport Museum in New York City. Granted, there are still the sleazy self-styled “outlaw” parlors that cater mostly to bikers, servicemen and drunken, slumming college kids, who pick their flaming death’s heads and babe designs from the array on the parlor walls.

It has also, ironically, branched off into upscale art studios located in nice areas that have the atmosphere of a high-class hair salon and advertising that targets the desires and pocketbooks of middle-class and upper-middle class professionals. It’s amazing to think of just how far the art of tattooing has penetrated polite society. So the next time you’re in a shopping mall or department store in an affluent area, you can guess, with a reasonable degree of certainty that all of the women below the age of 50 probably have flower tattoos of some kind somewhere on their stylish bodies. That’s to be expected in trendy, 21st Century America.

It is safe to say that nearly 50% of people from the age of 18 to 35 have at least one tattoo. So one might think were did tattoos come from and how long have they been around. The word tattoo comes from the Polynesian word, ‘tatao’, which means to tap or to mark someone. It has been reported that tattoos have been around for nearly 5,000 years. Archaeologist have found that tattoos can be traced to such countries as Egypt, Roman, Greek and Japanese regions. Of course tattoos have not always been used for personal body art like most people use them as today.

Tattoos over the years have been used for several reasons, such as, symbols of rights, symbols of rank and seniority or being juniors, symbols of spirituality, devotion, religion, rewards and awards for bravery, amulets, talismans and security. Oddly enough tattoos were also used as a form a punishment, they were also used to mark someone as an outcast, as well as marking slaves and people who have been convicted of a crime.

There are still very few religions out there that require their followers to have a certain tattoo indicating that they are part of this particular religion and what their status maybe. This is still a common practice that is used today by gang members.

The very first electronic tattoo machine was invented in 1890, by American tattoo artist named Samuel O’Reilly. This is when the new era of tattoo started when people got tattoos on different parts of their body not signifying any association to a particular group. However, tattoos were still looked upon as non sense and they were only suitable for drunkards, sailors and sometimes, criminals.

Ironically, in today’s time tattoos are not looked down upon and are actually accepted and considered the hip cool thing to have. They are now considered as a fashion symbol and not a simple mark.

So you’ve thought long and hard about getting a tattoo and you’ve decided that yes, you’re definitely going to ‘get inked’? If so, the next logical question to ask is, “What design do I choose?”

If you have absolutely no idea about what sort of design you’d like superimposed onto your body, it’s going to take you many hours of careful consideration. You will need to view as many designs as possible, ensuring you make the right decision.

Making the right decision is critical – so we’ll help you find free tattoo designs!
Making the right decision is really important when it comes to choosing a tattoo design, because deciding to have a tattoo is a lifelong commitment. It’s not like buying something at the store, and taking it back because you’ve changed your mind. A tattoo – unless you undertake expensive, painful laser removal procedures – is for life. That is why we advise you to view as many different tattoo designs as possible, so you make the right design decision. If you’ve already been researching designs, chances are you have heard all about free tattoo designs and galleries online where you can view and download individual designs of interest. It’s an absolute maze online, because there are just so many galleries to check out, so to make the process a little easier and a whole lot more time efficient for you, we’re going to introduce you to four good websites – membership-based and totally free- that are jam-packed full of free tattoo designs!

Our recommended list of free tattoo design websites to check out!
We’re fairly confident in assuming that it’s going to take you many hours to decide on a tattoo design that’s right for you. When we searched the web on your behalf for the best free tattoo design sites online, we found that virtually all of them required paid membership which would allow you to download as many designs as you like. Here are just some of these membership-based or totally free tattoo design websites we took a look at:

1) tattoojohnny.com
A really well designed website dedicated to free tattoo design ideas, Tattoo Johnny provides anybody interested in getting a tattoo with the information and design ideas they need to consider, in order to make the right decision. Although the actual tattoo ideas are free for you to print the color version of the design, the strong message this site conveys is that to ensure your tattoo is perfect, you will need to download the artist’s stencil of the design you like. For a small fee (typically under $20USD), you can download the stencil, however visitors are assured that this will save you money when you go to a tattoo artist. If you simply take a design picture or photograph to your chosen artist, they will need to charge you to create a stencil while you wait. At Tattoo Johnny, you simply pay a small fee to download the artist stencil, and when you are ready to ‘get inked’, you give your tattoo artist a copy of the color version and the artist stencil. Tattoo Johnny even goes one step further to make sure you are well prepared to have a tattoo done, because you can test drive your tattoo by creating your own test tattoo using the transfer paper available for just $3.89 at the online store. This way you can trial a washable tattoo to make sure it suits you, before you take the permanent tattoo plunge.

2) tattoodles.com
Tattoodles is a paid membership website which features a large range of tattoo designs that you can print out and take to the tattoo artist of your choice. This website features the works of many tattoo artists and hosts an online tattoo artist community where these people can network and share ideas and inspiration. An online magazine is also accessible via the website, and is packed with articles related to all tattoo issues. This site is popular amongst tattoo artists and those interested in getting a tattoo of their own. With a huge array of tattoo designs to view, Tattoodles is a site you won’t want to miss in your search for the perfect design.

3) tattoospot.com
Tattoo Spot is a completely free website that allows you to check out a large range of tattoo photographs. It is a website where people upload photographs of their own tattoos, so it doesn’t actually provide visitors to the site with actual drawings of tattoo designs that you can take to your tattoo artist. If you found a design on this website from a photograph which appealed, you would need to take it to your tattoo artist, and they would have to create a stencil in order to superimpose the design onto your skin.

4) tattoomenow.com
This is another paid-membership website where you have access to thousands of tattoo designs once you join. Founded by a self-confessed tattoo enthusiast, Tattoo Me Now claims to be the ultimate tattoo membership and design gallery. After many months of research, Tattoo Me Now was launched and now provides tattoo enthusiasts with a huge tattoo design gallery of more than 3,500 tattoo designs categorized by type. A member gallery is also loaded with photographs of tattoos to provide you with even more ideas. If you’re looking for the perfect tattoo design or inspiration at all, this is a good site to join.

There are many more membership and completely free tattoo design websites to check out!
The four websites we list in this article will provide you with enough ideas to get you started on your tattoo design decision-making journey! We trust you’ll have a lot of fun and wish you all the very best when it comes to finding the tattoo design that’s just right for you! Remember that although there are many sites where you can print out photographs or drawings of tattoo designs, the tattoo design itself is never totally free, because your tattoo artist will need to create a stencil for that design, in order to superimpose it onto your skin. Happy searching!
